Description

Japanese Antique Wood Carved Mask Usobuki Hyottoko Kyogen Folk Art 23cm

This is an authentic Japanese hand-carved wooden mask representing the character "Usobuki" (うそぶき), a distinctive figure in Kyogen (traditional comic theater) and Japanese folklore. It is characterized by its puckered, whistling mouth and deeply carved wrinkles on the forehead and cheeks.

This piece belongs to the "Dochaku-men" (indigenous/folk mask) category. Unlike refined Noh masks, this style features raw, powerful chisel marks that highlight the natural grain and texture of the wood, embodying a rustic "Mingei" (folk art) aesthetic. In Japanese culture, this puckered-mouth expression is also closely associated with "Hyottoko," a lucky figure often seen in festival dances and Shinto rituals.
