Antique Joseon Dynasty Katade Tea Bowl Chawan - Hard Fired with Kintsugi-style Repair 13cm KRS183

This is an authentic Joseon Dynasty (Yi Dynasty) tea bowl, classified in the Japanese tea ceremony as Katade (堅手). The term "Katade" literally translates to "hard-hand," referring to the high-firing temperature that resulted in a dense, stony ceramic body that produces a clear, metallic ring when tapped.

This bowl possesses a dignified and quiet presence, characterized by its cool, pale sandy-beige glaze and a refined network of natural Kannyu (crackle) that has developed over centuries of use.

Key Features:

  • Historic Joseon Artistry: A genuine piece of Korean ceramic history, deeply admired by Japanese tea masters for its honest and robust form.

  • Katade Characteristics: The bowl features a tight, hard-fired glaze and a sturdy Kodai (foot) that reveals the original iron-rich clay body.

  • Elegant "Keshiki" (Landscape): The subtle throwing marks (rokuro-me) and the variegated tones in the glaze create a captivating visual landscape for the practitioner.

  • Wabi-Sabi Restoration: The rim features a professional historical repair. In the world of tea, such restorations are not seen as flaws but as "beauty marks" that celebrate the bowl's long history and the care it has received.

Size (Approx.):

  • Diameter: 13.0 cm / 5.1 in

  • Height: 5.4 cm / 2.1 in

  • Weight: 257 g / 0.57 lbs

Condition: Antique condition with deep historical character. The bowl is structurally sound. There is a visible historical line (age crack) and a skilled repair on the rim. These elements embody the Wabi-Sabi aesthetic of finding beauty in the aged and imperfect. Please inspect the high-resolution photos carefully to appreciate the fine crackle and patina.
