Description

A bronze waniguchi bell.
The bell has the year Tenmei 4"1784 " written on it.
The bell is made of bronze, but the chain is made of iron.

This is an antique Japanese bronze Waniguchi (temple gong) from the Edo period, traditionally hung at shrines and temples for worship. It is struck with a thick rope to produce a resonant sound during prayers and offerings.

A remarkable feature of this piece is that it retains its original Edo-period iron chain, which is extremely rare. Very few Waniguchi come with their original chains, making this a highly valuable find for collectors.

The inscription on the back indicates that it was made in Tenmei 4 (1784), during the era of Tokugawa Ieharu, a period marked by the Great Tenmei Famine.
