Description

This is a vintage Japanese pottery octopus trap, known as a "takotsubo." It is a traditional fishing tool now appreciated as a Mingei (folk art) object or maritime decor.

The unglazed earthen pot features a slightly flared rim and a circular drainage hole at the flat base. The exterior and the inner neck are heavily encrusted with natural marine growths, including barnacles and calcareous tube shells. An old, faded rope is threaded through a small hole on the side and tied around the neck.

If you intend to use this as a flower vase, please place a water-holding insert or inner container inside the vase to hold the water.
Height: 21.0 cm / 8.26 in
Width: 17.0 cm / 6.69 in
Depth: 17.0 cm / 6.69 in
Weight: 2100 g / 4.62 lbs

The item is in vintage, heavily used condition, showing signs of aging and long-term submersion in seawater. There are extensive marine encrustations, natural wear, ingrained dirt, and deterioration on the rope.
