Description

Anonymous Modern Japanese Studio Pottery Henkei Chawan – Rivet-Like Design

This is a unique Japanese studio pottery chawan with a bold asymmetrical form and striking rivet-like clay details around the rim.

Although unsigned, the piece appears to be a modern Japanese studio work, possibly from the Kansai region. The form combines the quiet function of a tea bowl with a strong sculptural presence, giving it a distinctive modern ceramic character.

The exterior is covered with a mottled ochre and brown glaze over iron-rich clay, creating a rugged, natural surface reminiscent of ash-glazed Japanese pottery. The folded rim, seam-like openings, and small raised clay studs appear to be intentional design elements rather than later repairs.

Its light weight of approximately 170g gives it a surprisingly delicate feel in the hand, despite its powerful appearance. This piece would be suitable as a modern matcha bowl, a display object, or a collector’s piece for those who appreciate unusual Japanese studio ceramics.
