This charming Japanese bronze incense burner features a cheerful tanuki (raccoon dog), a beloved figure in Japanese folklore known for symbolizing good fortune, prosperity, and playful mischief.
Made of solid bronze, the piece displays a warm dark patina with hints of red lacquer. The rotund tanuki is depicted with a joyful expression, a rope decoration, and a fan-shaped hat resting on its head, which serves as a lid. The front of the body is inscribed with the characters 「大黒帳」(Daikokuchō), referencing Daikoku, the deity of wealth and fortune, further emphasizing the piece’s auspicious nature.
Originally, the lid was meant to be affixed to the body via a dedicated connector, but that part is missing; a metal nail is currently used as a substitute. This detail adds to the rustic, folk-art charm of the piece, reflecting its history as a functional and well-loved object.
Dating from the Taisho to early Showa period, this burner is ideal for collectors of Japanese bronzes, folk art, or unique incense accessories. It works beautifully both as a display item and a conversation piece.
