This is an antique Japanese wooden merchant's small chest of drawers, estimated to date from the late Edo period. It features a specialized security mechanism where the front drawers lack handles and can only be opened by pushing them from behind through finger holes located on the back panel. 

The chest is constructed with heavily textured natural wood grain and is equipped with a top carrying handle made of iron. This handle is detailed with a finely stippled texture known as "nanako-ji" (fish roe pattern), a sophisticated traditional Japanese metalworking technique frequently used on samurai sword fittings, indicating high-quality, custom craftsmanship.

The chest is in antique condition, showing significant signs of aging and historical use. There are visible surface scratches, scuffs, natural wood wear, discoloration, and oxidation on the iron components.
