Late Edo Meiji Antique Japanese Bamboo Carving Kanzan Jittoku Zen Monks

This is an antique Japanese bamboo carving depicting Kanzan and Jittoku (Hanshan and Shide), legendary Chinese Zen monks, dating from approximately the late Edo to early Meiji period (19th century).

The carving features the two figures closely examining an unfolded scroll, with a bundled broom resting near the base. The figures are carved with deeply incised hair, detailed facial features, and layered robes. The piece utilizes the natural form and texture of the bamboo root.
