This is an antique Japanese carved wooden figure of a tiger, dating from the Edo period, used as a maedate (samurai helmet crest).

The lightweight figure depicts a full-bodied tiger in a dynamic, leaping pose. Its highly stylized design is characteristic of the "Neko-Tora" (cat-tiger) depictions often found in Edo period hanging scrolls. It is finished with gold leaf (kinpaku) and black accents for the fur details. The abdomen features a black wooden peg designed for inserting the crest into the front bracket of a kabuto helmet.
