Description

Antique Aizu-Hongo Ware Plate – Edo end(Bakumatsu) – Amber Glaze with Unique Kiln Marks

This is a folk-style amber-glazed plate from the Bakumatsu, made in the Aizu-Hongo kilns of Japan. A key feature is the grooved rim and visible firing pin marks on the tamatuki area—this is the unglazed ring where the plate rests on the kiln shelf during firing. Unlike many kilns where support marks are inside the footring, here they appear on the outer base, a distinct trait of Aizu-Hongo ware.

The glaze is a deep amber brown with attractive variation, and the form is simple yet modern—reflecting the beauty of everyday folk craft (mingei).

Condition: There is a small chip on the edge.Small chip on the underside of the rim (not visible from above), otherwise excellent. Plates like this were used in everyday kitchens during the Meiji period, and most surviving pieces show heavy wear. This one is unusually well-preserved.

A rare and beautiful example of Japanese folk ceramics, ideal for collectors and admirers of traditional craft.
