Antique Japanese Wooden Midwife Signboard Sanba Hagiwara Tei Taisho Showa

This is an antique Japanese double-sided wooden signboard for a midwife, estimated to date from the late Meiji to early Showa period (circa 1910s-1930s). 

The board features a black-painted background with white characters reading "Sanba" (the traditional Japanese term for midwife) and the practitioner's name, "Hagiwara Tei." The text is read from right to left, consistent with older Japanese writing styles. The characters are not simply painted but are incised into the wood, creating a highly distinctive typographic style. Both sides of the wooden board display the exact same design. Two metal loops are attached to the top edge for hanging. This piece serves as a tangible artifact of Japanese women's medical folk history.

The signboard is in its original antique condition with clear signs of aging and historical use. There are visible chips on the wooden edges and corners, peeling and cracking of the white paint within the carved characters, surface scratches, and general scuffs on the black background.
