Description

Antique Edo Tanba Ware Stoneware Ribbed Tapered Flower Vase Bakumatsu PV314

This is an antique Japanese Tanba ware stoneware flower vase dating from the Bakumatsu period, the final years of the Edo period. It is made from iron-rich clay characteristic of the historic Tanba kilns.

The vase has a strong tapered form with vertical ribbed facets, known as shinogi, running down the body. Its surface shows a deep reddish-brown to dark amber glaze, with rich iron tones and natural variation created during high-temperature kiln firing.

Around the shoulder and narrow flared neck, greenish-brown ash-glaze-like effects can be seen. These areas were likely formed when wood ash in the kiln fused with the iron-rich glaze during firing, creating subtle natural kiln effects typical of traditional Tanba ware.

The combination of the faceted form, dark iron glaze, and greenish-brown kiln variation gives the piece a powerful yet refined presence, making it suitable as both a flower vase and a decorative ceramic object.
