Vintage Ushinoto-yaki Round Vessel — Iconic Green & Black Bi-color Design

This large, round vessel is a quintessential work of Ushinoto-yaki. While originally designed as a substantial ashtray, its sculptural form and wide opening make it an exceptional Hanashi (flower vase) or a centerpiece bowl.

The vessel features the pottery's most famous signature: a bold, vertical split-glaze known as Kiwake. One half is coated in a deep, lustrous black, while the other features a vibrant, speckled turquoise-green. This specific color palette was popularized during the Mingei movement under the guidance of folk-art leaders like Yoshida Shoya and Kawai Kanjiro, bridging the gap between traditional craft and modern design.

The rounded, "donut" shape provides a satisfying visual weight, while the unglazed base reveals the raw, sandy texture of the local Tottori clay. It is a piece that feels both ancient and remarkably contemporary.

Condition

  • Overall: Excellent vintage condition.

  • Surface: The glaze maintains a high gloss. There are natural pinholes and minor kiln effects (speckles) inherent to folk-kiln firing, which add to its authentic character.
