Japanese Antique Ko-Karatsu Black Glaze Warizansho Bowl Momoyama Period 16C
A rare, oversized Warizansho radiating the commanding presence and rugged elegance of the Momoyama period.
Description
This is an antique Japanese Ko-Karatsu black-glazed “Warizansho” bowl with three legs, dating to the late Momoyama period (late 16th–early 17th century).
The “Warizansho” form, named after the split fruit of the Japanese pepper, was favored for tea utensils and serving dishes during the golden age of the tea ceremony.
This piece is covered in a deep black iron glaze with natural kiln variations and pooling, a hallmark of fine Ko-Karatsu ware produced in the Hizen Province kilns.
The reddish, iron-rich clay and the elegant form reflect the high level of craftsmanship characteristic of the Momoyama-period Karatsu kilns.
