Description

Ethnic Wooden Short Knife with Carved Sheath and Ornaments – Southeast Asian Folk Craft AIN53

Description:
This is a unique hand-carved wooden short knife with a matching sheath, originally sold as a Japanese Ainu "Makiri" knife. However, based on its design features—such as the floral carving patterns and the decorative style—it is more likely to originate from Southeast Asia, particularly among hill tribes in Vietnam, northern Thailand, or Laos.

Attached to the sheath is a braided cord with a wooden toggle, turquoise-colored and red glass beads, and an old-style coin. These elements, especially the Netsuke-like toggle and Ainu-style glass bead, are likely later additions by a Japanese collector, reflecting a traditional Japanese aesthetic.
Judging by the wear patterns and gentle aging, it seems this piece was carefully preserved and valued over time in Japan.

Features:

  • Cultural Origin: Likely Southeast Asian folk art—possibly from Vietnam highland tribes, northern Thailand, or Laos

  • Handcrafted Design: Detailed floral carvings on wood, exhibiting ethnic folk style

  • Decorative Additions: Japanese-style elements such as a Netsuke-like wooden toggle, glass beads reminiscent of Ainu dama, and an old coin motif—likely added by a Japanese collector

  • Material: Wood (sheath & handle), steel (blade), glass, brass (coin), braided cord

Suggested Use:
A charming and culturally rich piece ideal for rustic interior decor or folk art collections.
Also suitable for display in ethnographic or cross-cultural antique exhibits.

Size (approx.):

  • Total Length: 31 cm / approx. 12.2 inches

  • Blade Length: 10 cm / approx. 3.9 inches

  • Weight: 170 g

Condition:
Used – Visible signs of age including patina, surface wear, and minor scratches on wood and blade.
The gentle aging and well-preserved form suggest it was carefully kept by a Japanese collector for many years.
Please check the photos for details.
