Japanese Antique wooden box Edo style Tansu chest of Drawers WBX304
Description
Japanese Antique Black Lacquer Edo-Style Tansu Chest of Drawers Storage Box WBX304
Description:
This compact Edo-style tansu is a beautifully crafted Japanese antique storage chest finished in deep black lacquer. Created in the Taisho to early Showa period, it reflects a time when traditional craftsmanship was transitioning into modern living. Originally used in merchant or household settings, this piece has now gained the character and presence of a true antique.
Notably, it was constructed without the use of iron nails, relying instead on small wooden dowels (kugi)—a traditional joinery technique often seen in Edo-period cabinetry. The original black lacquer finish appears to have been repainted in later years, contributing to its layered patina and aged appearance.
Features:
-
Solid paulownia (kiri) and cedar (sugi) woods with a dark, ink-like lacquered surface
-
Five drawers in graduated sizes: two full-width, two half-width, and one quarter-width—for organized storage of documents, tools, or tea utensils
-
Forged iron handles and a decorative sakura-motif knob, all retaining original aged patina
-
Compact and elegant—ideal for storing stationery, jewelry, or as a focal accent in wabi-sabi, Meiji, or Japanese-inspired interiors
Suggested Uses:
Perfect for organizing calligraphy tools, craft supplies, remotes, or small keepsakes. It also makes a striking decorative piece in a modern home, tearoom, or retail display—blending functionality with traditional aesthetics.
Size:
Width: 34 cm / approx. 13.4 inches
Depth: 24.5 cm / approx. 9.6 inches
Height: 28 cm / approx. 11.0 inches
Weight: approx. 3 kg
Condition:
Vintage-to-antique condition. The lacquer shows scratches, abrasions, and areas of later repaint. The wood has minor splits and wear to the corners consistent with age and long use. The hardware retains its original oxidized surface. Structurally sound and suitable for decorative or light practical use.
