Description

Japanese Antique Takotsubo Octopus Pot Barnacle Covered Fishing Jar PV271-2

Description

Discover an authentic piece of Japanese coastal history. This antique takotsubo is a hand-thrown ceramic octopus pot once used by fishermen to lure and trap octopus on the seafloor. Years in the sea have left a dramatic crust of natural barnacles across the surface, giving the jar a distinctive wabi-sabi character that celebrates age and use.

Made from coarse high-fired clay with a dark iron glaze, the jar shows the reddish buff body at the base and a deliberately drilled drainage hole. Thick rim, tapered body and generous wall thickness are typical of Edo to early Showa period fishing ware. The barnacle accretions are genuine, not applied, and testify to long submersion in Japan’s coastal waters.

This maritime relic makes an evocative statement in coastal interiors, restaurant displays, garden landscapes or any collection of Japanese folk tools and marine antiques. Its sculptural texture and rich patina harmonize well with both modern and rustic décor.
