Description

Japanese Antique Takotsubo Octopus Pot Barnacle Covered Fishing Jar PV271

Description

Introduce a rare piece of Japanese maritime heritage with this antique takotsubo (octopus pot), traditionally used by coastal fishermen for octopus trapping. This black and terracotta ceramic vessel has naturally accumulated barnacle formations from long submersion, offering a vivid testimony to its authentic sea use.

This is an original Japanese fishing jar from the pre-modern period, made of coarse-fired pottery. Its robust body and hand-tied rope are typical of Edo to Showa-era fishing tools. The surface is partially encrusted with real barnacles, enhancing its rustic charm and natural history appeal. A drainage hole at the base further confirms its utilitarian origin.

Perfect for display as a coastal-themed interior object, wabi-sabi decor, or collection of Japanese folk tools and marine antiques. Its raw character and maritime patina make it a compelling conversation piece for collectors and designers alike.
