■ Description A. Introduction Step back into the world of the Samurai tea ceremony with this exquisite antique Korean pottery bowl. Originating from the Mid-Joseon Dynasty (17th Century), this piece is classified as "Kata-de" (Hard Style). Known for its solid, porcelain-like hardness, this style was highly prized by Japanese tea masters of the Edo period for its refined simplicity and durability.

B. Features & Cultural Context

  • Gohon-style Blush: Soft pinkish-red blushes and gentle bleeding tones appear on the pale beige surface, a highly admired and sought-after coloration known from Gohon wares.
Style: "Kata-de" (Hard Style): Unlike softer pottery, "Kata-de" is fired at high temperatures, resulting in a hard, stone-like body that resonates when tapped. It represents a transition towards porcelain while retaining the warmth of pottery.

  • Era: 17th Century (Mid-Joseon Dynasty).

  • Glaze & Patina: The bowl features a mesmerizing network of crackles (Kannyu). Over centuries of use, liquids have seeped into these crackles, creating the cherished "Amamori" (rain leak) staining effect. The interplay between the hard white glaze and the warm, pinkish-beige patina gives it a profound "Wabi-sabi" appearance.

  • Foot Ring: The unglazed foot reveals a hard, sandy clay, confirming its classification as a high-fired ware.

C. Usage & Decor Ideas

  • Guinomi (Sake Cup): At 10cm wide, it is a grand size for a sake cup, offering a satisfying weight and texture in the hand.

  • Tea Bowl (Chawan): Perfect for a casual tea ceremony (Chabako) or for enjoying high-quality Sencha.

  • Collection: A quintessential example of the "Korai Chawan" (Korean Tea Bowl) aesthetics admired in Japan.

D. Size & Weight

  • Diameter: 10.0 cm / 3.93 in

  • Height: 4.9 cm / 1.92 in

  • Weight: 220 g / 0.48 lbs

E. Condition Condition: Antique / Wabi-sabi This item is over 300 years old.

  • Hairlines: There are visible hairlines (Nyu) running down the body, which have stabilized over time. In the context of antique tea wares, these are considered "scenery" (Keshiki) and proof of its long history, adding to its character.

  • Surface: Shows beautiful aging and staining typical of excavated or heirloom pieces.

F. Conclusion This "Kata-de" bowl captures the essence of the Edo tea aesthetic—finding beauty in the hard, unadorned reality of the material. It is a robust yet elegant piece of history. Please check the photos to appreciate the beautiful crackle glaze and texture.
