Japanese Seto-Oribe Matcha Tea Bowl - Emerald Green & Crackle Glaze Chawan with Artist Mark 

Immerse yourself in the rustic elegance of the Japanese Tea Ceremony with this remarkable Seto-Oribe Ware Matcha Bowl (Chawan). Dating from the 19th century (Late Edo to Meiji period), this vessel beautifully showcases the dynamic, asymmetrical beauty that defines the celebrated Oribe ceramic tradition.

Key Artistic & Historical Features:

  • The Drama of Oribe Glaze: The bowl features a striking contrast of two distinct glazes. One side is enveloped in a brilliant, pooled copper-green Oribe glaze that flows dynamically down the ribbed body, while the other side exposes a warm cream-white feldspathic glaze.

  • Dense Spiderweb Crackle (Kannyu): The cream-glazed areas are entirely covered in a magnificent, micro-fine crackle network. Over decades of use, tea tannins have naturally stained these lines, creating a deeply soulful, organic texture.

  • Sculptural Foot Ring (Kodai): The underside reveals a powerful, unglazed dark stoneware base. It features distinct spiral tool marks (Tomoe-uzumaki) left by the potter's chisel and bears a hand-incised archaistic artist signature.

  • Period Storage Box: Includes a matching historic wooden storage box (Tomobako/Awasebako) hand-inked with the kanji "茶盛" (Chamori—an archaic term for a tea bowl).
