This type of marbled pattern is created by polishing layers of lacquer that have been built up over time. Originally, the surface is coated with thick lacquer like on the sides, but through careful polishing, it reveals these beautifully intricate patterns.
This is a beautiful Japanese antique lacquerware tray from the Aizu region, known for its refined urushi craftsmanship. Made between the Meiji and Taisho periods, the piece showcases a rich, mottled red-and-gold surface with stunning texture, created by the tame-nuri (transparent lacquer layering) and maki-e inspired background marbling techniques.
Its shallow pedestal form and wide rim make it suitable for multiple uses—displaying tea utensils, incense sets, seasonal ornaments, or as a Zen-inspired interior accent. The uneven, hand-finished surface gives it a rustic elegance and a strong wabi-sabi character.
