Description

This is an antique Japanese Buddhist hand staff, known as a te-shakujo, likely dating from the Edo to Meiji period. It consists of a carved wooden handle and a forged metal finial.

The metal head features a peach-shaped outer ring containing a symmetrical central motif, which represents a stylized Buddhist three-pronged vajra (sanko) or stupa. Unlike standard shakujo, this piece currently has no small metal rings (yukan) attached to the frame. The wooden handle has a faceted upper section and features remnants of an old cord tied near the metal collar.

The item is in antique condition, showing signs of aging and historical use. There is surface wear, oxidation and dark patina on the metal parts, and scratches and natural discoloration on the wooden handle. The small metal rings typically found on a shakujo are missing.
