Description

Antique Imari / Hasami Kurawanka Ware Small Tea Cup - Fluid Blue & White Flora with Silver Kintsugi - Late Edo Period (124g)

This is an exceptionally charming Antique Japanese "Koro-Chawan" (Small Utility Cup) from the late Edo period (19th century). Crafted in the historic Hasami/Imari tradition, this vessel style is famously known as Kurawanka Ware, celebrated for its rustic thickness, organic beauty, and deep connections to the daily life of samurai-era Japan.

The Historical Imari Connection: While produced in the kilns of Hasami, all porcelain from this region was historically shipped across the globe from the famous port of Imari. Thus, in the international antique market, these pieces are highly recognized and cataloged under the elite pedigree of Antique Imari Ware.

Key Artistic Features:

  • Masterful Dynamic Brushwork: The exterior features a stunning underglaze blue (Sometsuke) botanical painting. The brushstrokes are incredibly fluid and confident, capturing the rustic spirit of wild flora (evoking classical bamboo or orchids) with high-level artistic economy.

  • Charming Interior Detail: The bottom interior of the cup (Mikomi) features a delightful, hand-painted five-dot floral accent inside concentric rings, an element highly prized by tea masters.

  • Elegant Silver Kintsugi (Gintsugi): The rim features a tiny, beautiful historic silver-alloy repair (Gintsugi). For antique enthusiasts, this accentuation of a minor chip elevates the cup into a supreme example of Wabi-Sabi—celebrating the object's survival and history.

  • The "Koro-Chawan" Profile: Its palm-sized, rounded form feels incredibly satisfying to hold. It is perfect for modern use as an antique sake cup (Ochoko), a small green tea cup, or a decorative Zen accessory.
