About the Title, Poem, and Image

The title, “Nemurenai” (Sleepless / Unable to Sleep), reflects the poem written above the owl:

“The owl is simply an owl,
and I am simply myself—
unable to sleep.”

The owl, naturally awake at night, appears calm and perfectly at home in the darkness. In contrast, the human speaker lies awake restlessly. This gentle contrast between the owl and the sleepless person gives the work both quiet humor and a sense of solitude. The owl’s large, vivid eyes visually reinforce the feeling of wakefulness during the night.

This is an original woodblock print titled "Nemurenai" (Sleepless) by the Japanese printmaker Iwao Akiyama. The artwork was created in 1997 and comes presented in a wooden frame.

The print depicts an owl perched on a branch, rendered in black ink on textured Japanese paper (washi) with red accents in the eyes. The composition incorporates a haiku poem by Santoka Taneda. The bottom margin includes the edition number (44/150), the year (1997), the title, the artist's pencil signature, and a red seal.
