■ Description Item Details This is a historic Japanese antique wooden box from the Taisho Period. While it features the classic design of a Temple or Shrine Offertory Box (Saisen-bako), historical inscriptions reveal it served a unique role in local community history.

  • Historical Context & Usage:

    • Not just a Saisenbako: This box was actually used as a "Community Savings Box" by a local neighborhood association.

    • Provenance: The inscriptions confirm it belonged to the "East Group Executive Association" (東組実行組合) in Shimokurizu, Komatsu City, Ishikawa Prefecture.

    • Activity: The writing details that members paid "30 sen" (Gold 30 Sen) monthly as community savings or mutual aid dues. It is a rare artifact documenting the mutual support systems (Kou or Kumiai) of early 20th-century Japanese villages.

  • Date: Dated "Taisho 7, April" (1918).

  • Design: It is crafted in a rustic style with a central handle for portability, typical of collection boxes used in temples or meetings.

  • Material: Wood with iron fittings.
