Japanese Antique Takotsubo Octopus Pot Fishing Jar PV280
Description
This is a traditional Japanese Takotsubo octopus pot, a type of fishing jar once used by fishermen to catch octopus. Made of unglazed terracotta, it shows the natural earthy texture and the passage of time with unique surface encrustations, reflecting its practical use in coastal villages. These jars are now highly valued as Japanese antiques and folk art collectibles.
The Takotsubo was lowered into the sea where octopus would enter and settle inside, making it easier to catch. Today, it serves as a fascinating decorative piece and a cultural artifact that represents Japan’s fishing traditions. Its wabi-sabi aesthetic makes it suitable for display in both traditional and modern interiors.
