The staff produces a rattling sound intended to warn small creatures to move aside, thereby avoiding accidental harm, and is also widely used in chanting and spiritual rituals.

The implement features a cast metal finial (likely brass or bronze) with a central shaft and six loose rings (yukan). It is securely mounted on a smooth, rounded wooden handle. The metal surface has developed a warm, natural patina over time with minor spots of oxidation.
