Vintage Japanese Tinplate Fukubiki Lottery Trays "Ooatari" (Jackpot) Set of 2
Description
This is a rare and highly nostalgic set of two vintage Japanese shallow trays, crafted from pressed tinplate (buriki).
The most striking feature of these trays is the large, embossed kanji characters in the center reading **"大當" (Oo-atari)**, which translates directly to **"Jackpot"** or "Big Win." Historically, trays like this were used in mid-century Japan during local shop raffles and lotteries (Fukubiki) to ceremoniously present the winning lottery ball or hand out the grand prize to the lucky winner. They may also have been used in retro game parlors.
The trays feature a classic industrial aesthetic with a ribbed outer rim and a peanut-shaped cartouche framing the auspicious characters. Made of tin-plated iron, they have developed a wonderful rustic, wabi-sabi patina over decades of use. These are fantastic display pieces for collectors of Japanese retro ephemera, distinctive coin/key trays, or simply as lucky charms for your home or business.
Size (Approximate per tray):
Diameter: 22.5 cm / 8.86 in
Height: 4.8 cm / 1.89 in
Weight (Total for both): 500 g / 1.10 lbs
Condition:
These trays are in rustic vintage condition, showing authentic signs of age and heavy historical use. As they are made of tinplate (iron core), there are visible spots of red rust, surface oxidation, scratches, and minor dents typical of utilitarian metalware from the mid-20th century Showa era.
