This is a Japanese wooden crossbar (yokogi) for a traditional hearth hook (jizaikagi), hand-carved in the shape of a Tai (sea bream) fish. It is a functional piece of Japanese folk art (Mingei) historically used in farmhouse kitchens.
The piece is carved from wood with a dark, matte aged finish and features detailed scales, fins, and a prominent eye. It comes with an attached iron chain for suspension from the ceiling. The Tai fish is a traditional Japanese symbol of good fortune and was often used as a protective talisman against fire in the home.

Condition:
