The Thirteen Buddhas (Jūsanbutsu) are a group of deities widely venerated in Japanese Buddhism, particularly in esoteric traditions. Despite the name, this group includes a mix of Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and Wisdom Kings. They play a central role in rituals and memorial services, believed to guide the souls of the deceased and protect the living.
The Thirteen Buddhas are associated with a series of posthumous rites held at specific intervals after death, such as the 7th, 49th, and 100th days. Each deity represents a stage in the soul’s journey through the afterlife. The group typically includes prominent figures like Fudō Myōō (the Immovable Wisdom King), Shaka Nyorai (the Historical Buddha), and Amida Nyorai (the Buddha of Infinite Light).
Their role extends beyond funerary rites; they are also revered for offering spiritual guidance and blessings in daily life. The concept of the Thirteen Buddhas highlights the compassionate nature of Buddhist teachings, ensuring support and salvation for practitioners on their spiritual path.
