This is a Horagai, a traditional Japanese conch shell horn used by Yamabushi, the mountain ascetic monks of Shugendo. The Horagai is a sacred instrument, historically used to communicate across mountainous terrain and in religious ceremonies.
It features a wooden mouthpiece with a narrow opening, which requires a special technique and considerable practice to play effectively.
Wrapped in a traditional red cord net, this piece reflects both utility and ceremonial craftsmanship.
