Bizen Ware Flower Vase – Kojima Takatoki and the Tale of Chuugi-zakura
This exquisite Bizen ware flower vase commemorates the legendary tale of Kojima Takatoki, a loyal samurai from the Nanboku-chō period of Japan (14th century). The vase is intricately crafted, depicting Kojima Takatoki standing with a shield, alongside a beautifully inscribed pillar with the words “Chuugi-zakura” (忠義桜), which translates to "Loyalty and the Cherry Blossom.
Historical Background: The Genkō War and Kojima Takatoki
The Genkō War (1331-1333) was a pivotal conflict initiated by Emperor Go-Daigo in an attempt to overthrow the Kamakura shogunate, leading to the tumultuous Nanboku-chō period. Kojima Takatoki is celebrated for his unwavering loyalty during this period, particularly for an incident where he carved a poem on a cherry tree (sakura), symbolizing his dedication to Emperor Go-Daigo, even in the face of overwhelming odds.
