Description:
This is a Japanese antique wooden Torii gate, traditionally symbolizing the boundary between the mundane and the sacred. Unlike those found in formal Shinto shrines, this piece was likely displayed in an old folk house or within a home altar that embraced Shinto beliefs.
A copper plaque is mounted at the top center, inscribed with “Shoichii / Kasuga Daimyojin” (正一位／春日大明神).
“Shoichii” refers to one of the highest ranks in the traditional Japanese system of divine hierarchy, known as shinkai. It was granted to especially revered deities, indicating the deep religious significance of this piece.
Crafted from natural wood, the Torii retains a rustic and spiritual atmosphere. Its aged patina, peeling paint, and weathered surfaces reflect its long-term use in a sacred domestic setting.
The right-side wooden fence panel is missing, which enhances the authenticity and antique character of this piece.
