The small choko cup is designed to fit neatly inside the pedestal cup.
This is an exquisite and exceptionally rare set of Koto ware from the late Edo period, featuring a pedestal cup (Takatsuki-hai) and a matching beku-hai (challenging sake cup). Koto ware is highly regarded for its delicate craftsmanship and detailed designs, and this set is no exception.
Key Features:
Finely Detailed Hand-painted Design: Both cups are adorned with intricate blue and white (sometsuke) paintings, showcasing masterful brushwork. The artistry captures traditional motifs with remarkable precision and elegance.
Beku-hai Functionality: The smaller cup, known as a "beku-hai," features a small hole at the bottom, adding an element of playful challenge to its use. Beku-hai cups were often used during festive gatherings to encourage participants to finish their drink entirely, as leaving liquid behind would cause it to spill.
Original Wooden Box: The set comes with its original wooden box. The underside of the lid bears inscriptions, likely indicating the recipient's name and details, adding historical context and provenance to the piece.
