Irabo Tea Bowls and Rakuzan Kiln
Irabo tea bowls are a type of Korean tea bowl from the Joseon Dynasty, cherished in Japan's wabi-cha tea culture. They are characterized by a coarse clay body rich in iron, covered with a yellowish-brown glaze, giving them a distinctive rough texture.
Rakuzan Kiln, part of the Izumo ware tradition, was established in 1677 by Kurazaki Gonbei, who was invited from the Hagi domain to Matsue. After a period of inactivity, the kiln was revived in 1801 by Nagaoka Jūemon Sadamasa under the patronage of Matsue domain lord Matsudaira Fumai.
The kiln specializes in tea utensils, notably tea bowls featuring techniques like hakeme (brush marks) and Irabo-style glazes, known for their subdued amber hues. These pieces are highly regarded by tea practitioners.
Currently, the 12th-generation head, Nagaoka Jūemon Kūkyō, continues the tradition, creating works that honor the kiln's rich heritage.
