This is an original Japanese woodblock print by Iwao Akiyama (1921-2014), a renowned artist and student of Shiko Munakata. The work is dated 1981 and features a bold black cat paired with a haiku by the poet Issekiji Kuribayashi.

The print is executed on Japanese washi paper with decorative inclusions. It depicts a large black cat with distinct red eyes and a focused expression. The lower portion contains hand-brushed calligraphy of the haiku: "A cannon with its big mouth open is pointing at me." The piece is hand-signed by the artist and marked as "Hatsuzuri" (First Edition/First Print).

Additional Cultural Note

This print incorporates a haiku by the poet Issekiji Kuribayashi:
"A cannon with its big mouth open is pointing at me."

This striking line is known for its modern and symbolic expression. Rather than describing a literal battlefield, the poem reflects the feeling of an individual confronting an overwhelming force or authority. The cannon can be interpreted as a metaphor for power, tension, and human vulnerability.

Condition:
The print is in good condition with no visible foxing or tears. The wooden frame shows minor surface scuffs and signs of age. The backing paper and hanging wire are intact and stable.
