This is a genuine antique piece.
This is an antique Tenmoku small bowl from China, dating from the Song to early Yuan dynasty. It was likely imported into Japan during the Kamakura period and brought ashore from the Sea of Japan. It is probably from a kiln near the Jian kiln. Tenmoku bowls are ceramic tea bowls fired with a glaze known as Tenmoku glaze.
The common explanation for the origin of the term 'Tenmoku' is that it was named after being fired near Mount Tenmoku. However, according to a scholar, the original meaning of 'Tenmoku' refers to bowls with a distinctive groove around the outer rim, like those seen in Tenmoku tea bowls.
