Description

This is an antique Japanese kake-suzuri, a portable calligraphy writing box, crafted from Keyaki (Zelkova) wood with heavy iron hardware. It is an unusually heavy and solidly constructed piece compared to standard models.

The wooden box features a distinctive top-opening lid compartment and side access with three separate drawers. It is heavily reinforced with thick, forged iron brackets, corner pieces, and robust carrying handles. The Keyaki wood displays a rich, warm brown tone with visible natural grain patterns.

Height: 20.0 cm / 7.87 in
Width: 27.0 cm / 10.62 in
Depth: 18.0 cm / 7.08 in
Weight: 4245 g / 9.35 lbs

The item is in antique condition, showing significant signs of aging and historical use. The wood exhibits surface wear, scratches, dents, and natural discoloration, with ink stains visible inside the compartments and drawers. The heavy iron hardware shows dark oxidation, rust, and wear typical of its age.
