Description

■ Description A. Introduction Find peace and serenity with this authentic Japanese Suiseki (Viewing Stone). Originating from the rough waters of the Genkai Sea (Genkai-nada) in Northern Kyushu, this stone has been naturally sculpted into the form of a standing "Sekibutsu" (Stone Buddha), specifically resembling Jizo Bosatsu.

B. Provenance & History (The Scroll) This item is accompanied by a detailed handwritten scroll documenting its history:

  • Origin: Genkai Sea (Genkai-nada). This area is famous for hard, dark stones polished by powerful waves.

  • Type: "Genkai-ishi" (Genkai Stone) / "Sekibutsu" (Stone Buddha).

  • Date of Collection: October, Showa 51 (1976) - collected nearly 50 years ago.

  • Daiza Maker: The wooden base was crafted by Jinda Takeshi. The base is signed with the character "Takeishi" (武石) on the bottom.

  • Label: The box label identifies it as "Jizo" (the guardian deity of children and travelers).

C. Features & Aesthetics

  • The Shape ("Sugata-ishi"): The stone possesses a smooth, rounded top representing the head and a tapered body resembling a robed monk or deity standing in prayer. It captures the humble and protective essence of Jizo.

  • Texture: Typical of Genkai stones, it has a superb dark, matte patina and a hard, smooth surface texture achieved through natural wave erosion.

D. Size & Weight

  • Stone Size: approx. 9.0 cm x 4.3 cm x 3.8 cm (3.5 in x 1.7 in x 1.5 in)

  • Stone Weight: 225 g

  • Total Weight (with Box): 330 g

E. Condition Condition: Vintage / Natural

  • Stone: Excellent natural condition. No artificial cutting or polishing is evident; it is a true stone appreciated for its natural form.

  • Accessories: The custom-carved Daiza fits the stone perfectly. The box and scroll show some signs of age (foxing/tanning) from 1976.

F. Conclusion A spiritual and historical piece. The combination of the specific "Genkai" provenance, the documented date of 1976, and the signed custom base makes this a high-quality collector's item. It brings a presence of quiet protection to any room.
