This is an antique Japanese cotton textile dating from the Meiji period, dyed in traditional indigo using the katazome (stencil-resist dyeing) technique.
The cloth features a striking repeating design of cranes (tsuru) and turtles (kame) arranged within circular motifs. In Japanese culture, the crane and turtle are both traditional symbols of longevity and good fortune, making this a particularly auspicious and highly recognizable decorative pattern.
The textile is made from three joined panels of cotton and retains a notably firm, crisp hand, characteristic of older densely woven cotton fabrics. With its large size of approximately 174 × 94 cm, it has a strong visual presence and works well not only as a collectible antique textile but also as a wall display or interior textile art.
Large surviving pieces of early Japanese indigo katazome with repeated crane-and-turtle motifs are not commonly encountered, making this an appealing example of traditional Japanese folk textile design.
