This is a beautifully crafted Seto ware vase created by Kato Shunto, a respected ceramic artist from one of Japan’s oldest pottery traditions. The piece features a rich glaze with natural kiln variations, expressing the quiet strength and elegance of Japanese craftsmanship.

Seto ware is one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns and is celebrated for its refined clay body and diverse glazing techniques developed since the Heian and Kamakura periods. This vase showcases a deep iron-rich glaze with flowing color transitions, a hallmark of Seto’s mastery of high-temperature firing. The work is signed on the base and comes with an original wooden box, reflecting the Japanese cultural custom of protecting valuable ceramics in handcrafted “kiribako” storage.

Perfect for home décor, interior display, ikebana flower arrangements, or as part of a Japanese ceramics collection. Its sculptural form makes it suitable as a standalone art object.

About the Artist — Kato Shunto (1916–2005)
