■ Description Item Details This is a charming Japanese Antique Picture Coin (Esen) from the Edo period (or possibly Meiji).

  • Subject (Ebisu):

    • The coin depicts Ebisu (恵比寿), one of the Seven Lucky Gods (Shichifukujin).

    • He is clearly identified by his signature attributes: he is holding a fishing rod and catching a large Sea Bream (Tai).

    • Note on Deity: While your notes mentioned "Daikoku," the imagery of the fishing rod and fish confirms this is Ebisu. Ebisu is the god of fishermen, luck, and workingmen, and is often paired with Daikoku (God of Wealth) to bring business prosperity.

  • Type (Esen): "Esen" (Picture Coins) were not legal tender but were used as toys (for a game called "Ana-ichi"), charms, or votive offerings at shrines.

  • Meaning: The design symbolizes "Success in Business" and "Great Catch (Harvest)".

Size

  • Diameter: approx. 2.31 cm / 0.90 in

  • Thickness: approx. 1.3 mm

Condition Condition: Antique / Used

  • General: It shows authentic signs of age, including wear, oxidation, and a darkened patina consistent with an item from the Edo era.

  • Surface: The details of the relief are worn but still visible. The square hole is characteristic of traditional Japanese coins.
