Antique Late Edo Maki-e Inro with Manju Netsuke and Ojime – BOSa75
This is an antique Japanese lacquer inro set dating from the late Edo period, probably around the mid-19th century to the Bakumatsu period.
The inro is richly decorated with elaborate floral motifs in various metallic tones, including silver-gray, red, gold, and dark lacquer. The decoration appears to combine several traditional maki-e techniques, including hiramaki-e (flat sprinkled lacquer decoration), togidashi maki-e (polished maki-e), and colored maki-e, together with fine metallic flakes and small foil-like details.
Large peony-like flowers and surrounding foliage cover much of the surface, creating a dense and highly decorative composition. The metallic powders produce different tones and reflections depending on the light.
A particularly interesting feature is the interior. The inside of the inro is lined with a reddish-brown textile-like material decorated with woven plant or floral motifs, giving the interior an unusually refined finish.
The set is accompanied by a round manju netsuke made of carved lacquer. The netsuke is decorated in vivid reddish-orange, black, green, and dark brown tones with densely carved floral and scrolling motifs.
The ojime bead appears to be made of goldstone glass (aventurine glass), displaying numerous fine copper-colored sparkling particles throughout the brown translucent body.
The black braided cord connects the inro, ojime, and manju netsuke.
Based on the style, lacquer decoration, and overall construction, this set is considered to date from the late Edo period, around the mid-19th century / Bakumatsu era, although an early Meiji date cannot be completely excluded.
