The metal surface shows natural oxidation and aged patina consistent with long use and age.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-end=\"1580\" data-start=\"1298\" dir=\"auto\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14px;\"\u003eJapanese kayaku-ire were portable containers used for carrying gunpowder for matchlock firearms. Lacquered wood was a common material for these flasks, and examples decorated with family crests or personal emblems are known from the Edo period. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"contents\" data-content-reference-end=\"1596\" data-content-reference-start=\"1554\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"\" data-state=\"closed\"\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-end=\"1770\" data-start=\"1582\" dir=\"auto\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14px;\"\u003eThe flask retains old cord fittings and associated fiber cords. These show considerable age, wear, fraying, and discoloration. An old paper-wrapped element is also present among the cords.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-end=\"1897\" data-start=\"1772\" dir=\"auto\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 14px;\"\u003eThe interior is finished in dark lacquer.
