This antique Japanese noren curtain is made from indigo-dyed cotton and decorated with floral motifs using the traditional tsutsugaki resist-dyeing technique. Tsutsugaki involves drawing designs with rice-paste resist before dyeing the fabric.

A particularly notable feature is the use of vermilion-red alongside pale blue and white against the deep indigo background. This combination of colors is an important point of interest in older Japanese folk textiles. The addition of vermilion creates a striking contrast and makes the piece especially appealing to collectors of traditional Japanese dyed fabrics.

The large floral designs, hand-drawn outlines, and variations in the dyed colors give the textile a distinctive character. Beyond its original function as a doorway curtain, it can also be appreciated as an example of Japanese folk textile craftsmanship.
