Beschreibung

This is a large and substantial antique Japanese cast iron vessel, likely originally used as a tea jar or decorative vase.

The body is decorated with deeply cast relief scenes. One side depicts a distinctive long-haired standing figure holding an axe-like implement in one hand and a folding fan in the other. Below the figure is a jar or vessel. Another area shows a seated figure, surrounded by a rugged, heavily textured landscape-like surface.

The exact story or identity of the figures is uncertain, but the composition appears to be based on a traditional Japanese or East Asian historical, legendary, or theatrical subject. Rather than assigning a specific story, the piece is best appreciated for its unusual figural imagery and strongly sculptural ironwork.

The surface has a dark reddish-brown patina with extensive age-related oxidation and textured areas, giving the vessel a powerful antique character. A vertical line can also be seen on part of the body, which appears to be related to the original casting process rather than a later break.

The lid appears to have been added later and is not original to the body. It bears a cast inscription associated with Ryubundo, but this mark should be understood as belonging to the lid rather than identifying the maker of the vessel itself.

There are age-related cracks, surface wear, oxidation, abrasions, and losses, particularly around the upper body and rim. Please examine the photographs carefully for the condition.
