Antique Late Edo Japanese Wooden Kake Suzuri Portable Writing Box WO620
Beschreibung
The box is in poor antique condition and requires an overhaul for full functionality. The top lid lock mechanism is defective and does not close securely; the lid will open if the box is lifted by the top handle. Additionally, there is a visible wood chip on the lower center of the interior compartment when the top lid is opened. There are general surface scratches, scuffs, and natural wear to the wood and iron fittings throughout. Due to the faulty latch, it is recommended to be used as a stationary piece rather than being carried.
This is an antique Japanese wooden kake-suzuri (portable writing box), dating back to the late Edo period. It is a traditional utilitarian item originally used by merchants or scribes for storing calligraphy tools, ledgers, and documents.
The chest features a top-opening lid with a metal carrying handle and drawers on the front for storage. It is constructed from natural wood, reinforced with traditional iron hardware, lock plates, and hinges.
