Antique 19th 20th C. Japanese Kinran Brocade Buddhist Textile Temple Banner Boro

This is an antique Japanese Buddhist textile, estimated to date from the 19-20th century (Edo to Meiji period). While its exact original purpose is unspecified, its long rectangular shape and the materials used suggest it may have been a temple banner or a component of a Buddhist priest's robe (kesa).

The front side is made of "Kinran" (gold brocade) fabric, intricately woven with traditional floral and foliate scrolling (karakusa) motifs using gold, green, and deep blue threads. The reverse side is lined with a plain, coarsely woven fabric, likely hemp or heavy cotton, in a natural brownish tone. It features a seam running down the center of the lining. This specific piece does not feature a dragon motif.

The textile is in antique condition, showing clear signs of aging and historical use. There is overall surface wear, fraying on the edges, loose threads, small tears, fading, stains, and discoloration on both the brocade front and the plain lining.
