Rare Japanese Studio Tea Bowl by Sugimoto Deigyu (Sadamitsu) - Momoyama & Kenzan Inspired Ceramic Chawan with Hand-Dipped Glaze Marks (347g) PCP298

Discover a profound piece of contemporary Japanese ceramic art: a Matcha Tea Bowl (Chawan) by the highly celebrated master potter Sugimoto Deigyu (杉本 泥牛), also known as Sugimoto Sadamitsu. This vessel displays a magnificent, loose aesthetic that brilliantly bridges the spirit of Momoyama-era tea masterworks with the playful, painterly legacy of the legendary Edo artist Ogata Kenzan.

Geological Texture & The Influence of Seto/Mino Clay: Unlike traditional rustic, grainy Shigaraki clay, this piece is crafted from a refined, softer-firing clay body reminiscent of historical Seto and Mino traditions (such as the famed Mogusa clay used for Shino ware). It possesses a gentle, warm beige tone under the glaze, providing a wonderfully soft, tactile comfort when held in the hands.

Artisan Glazing & The Master's Fingerprints:

  • Traditional Hand-Dipped Method: On the lower walls near the foot ring, you can observe faint, intentional raw clay finger marks. This provides fascinating visual proof of the artisan's process: holding the heavy bowl upside down by its base with his bare fingers and plunging it directly into a vat of thick, creamy feldspathic (longspur-derived) white glaze.

  • Bold Avant-Garde Iron Painting: The face of the bowl is decorated not with a fine brush, but with a dramatic, fluid application of iron-black slip. The sweeping, graphic gesture feels highly artistic and abstract, capturing the poetic elegance of Ogata Kenzan’s famous designs.

  • Dense Spiderweb Crackle (Kannyu): The thick white glaze layers have developed a beautiful, natural network of fine crackles that will beautifully darken over years of tea use.

  • The Master's Crescent Seal: The raw, exposed clay foot ring carries the sharp, hand-stamped crescent moon seal of Sugimoto Deigyu.
