Japanese Meiji-Taisho Bronze Square Vase by Tsuda Shinzui — Mokume Texture

Description
This square bronze vessel is a masterful example of late 19th to early 20th-century Japanese metalwork. It is attributed to the metal artist Tsuda Shinzui, whose signature "Shinzui" (真瑞) is incised on the base.

The vase is distinguished by its mokume (wood-grain) decorative expression. While crafted entirely from bronze, the surface evokes the swirling grain and natural knots of aged timber, accented by cast decorative “nails” that give the piece the appearance of a rustic wooden box. This interplay between material and form—making heavy metal resemble organic wood—beautifully reflects the technical sophistication of Meiji and Taisho era craftsmanship.

The rich, dark patina and substantial weight give it a grounded, dignified presence, making it suitable for minimalist floral arrangements or as a standalone sculptural object.
